The Zone is a multimedia lab in the Interactive Learning Center where students can design, develop, and produce digital-media projects for academic assignments.

The Zone offers students current digital-media technologies for Web and multimedia authoring; for creating brochures and flyers; for editing digital video and audio; and for developing digital presentations, documentaries, and portfolios.

What types of digital media can students create in The Zone?

Web Page Development Tools
Design Web pages that include text, photos, audio, and video, or even your own Flash animations.

Software Available: Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft Expression Web for web pages; Macromedia Flash for Flash animations; Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop Elements for web graphics.

Digital Video and Audio Production Tools
Capture and edit digital video clips that incorporate titles, transitions, photos, background music, screen recordings, and narration. Edit and convert audio files and generate unique sound effects.

Software Available: iMovie (Mac) and Windows Movie Maker (PC) for simple video projects; Final Cut Express (Mac), Adobe Premiere Elements (PC), and VlogIt for "green screen" recording; Audacity and SoundForge for audio recording and editing. AVS Video and Audio Tools (for file conversion).

Presentation Tools
Develop PowerPoint presentations or record dynamic video-based presentations.

Software Available: Microsoft PowerPoint; VlogIt for video presentations; PhotoStory 3 for photo slide shows.

Graphics and Print Tools
Create flyers, newsletters, brochures, or other print-based materials incorporating logos, custom graphics, and photos. Scan graphics and text using a flatbed scanner.

Software Available: Adobe Photoshop Elements for editing photos; Microsoft Publisher for creating brochures and flyers; Adobe Acrobat and PDF995 for creating PDF files; Microsoft Office.

Multimedia CD-ROM Creation Tools
Assemble and burn auto-run, interactive, multimedia CDs to showcase student portfolios, presentations, or catalogs of photos or artwork.

Software Available: iDVD (Mac) and Nero (PC, for burning CD- and DVD-ROMS).

Group Projects
Because student media projects are often assigned as group projects, tables in the Zone are set up to allow groups of students to brainstorm, create, and preview their digital productions.

Instructors who are planning to include a digital-media component in their assignments are encouraged to submit an Online Order for Consulting on Student Media Assignments, including authorizing your students to use the lab, scheduling any desired training, and identifying strategies for planning and managing successful student digital-media projects.

Student Workshops
During the first eight weeks of each semester, student workshops are taught on the most popular software tools. Please go to our Zone Calendar to see when workshops are available. To reserve a seat for a specific workshop. Call the Zone at 426-3209.
