The Faculty New Media Center is a multimedia lab in the Simplot-Micron building where faculty can design, develop, and produce digital-media resources to use in their teaching.

The Faculty New Media Center is equipped with current digital-media technologies for Web and multimedia authoring; for creating brochures and flyers; for editing digital video and audio; and for developing digital presentations, documentaries, and portfolios.

 

 What tools and resources are available in the Faculty New Media Center?

Web Page Development Tools
Design Web pages that include text, photos, audio, and video, or even your own Flash animations.

Software Available: Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Contribute, and Microsoft FrontPage for web pages; Macromedia Flash for Flash animations; Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop Elements for web graphics.

Digital Video and Audio Production Tools
Capture and edit digital video clips that incorporate titles, transitions, photos, background music, screen recordings, and narration. Edit and convert audio files and generate unique sound effects.

Software Available: iMovie (Mac) and Windows Movie Maker (PC) for simple video projects; Final Cut Express (Mac), Adobe Premiere Elements (PC), and ULead Video Studio (PC) for larger video projects; Camtasia Studio for computer screen recordings; Visual Communicator and VlogIt for "green screen" recording; Audacity and SoundForge for audio recording and editing.

Presentation Tools
Develop PowerPoint presentations or record dynamic video-based presentations.

Software Available: Microsoft PowerPoint; Camtasia for narrated slide lectures; Visual Communicator and VlogIt for video presentations; PhotoStory 3 for photo slide shows.

Graphics and Print Tools
Create flyers, newsletters, brochures, or other print-based materials incorporating logos, custom graphics, and photos. Scan graphics and text using a flatbed scanner.

Software Available: Corel Draw and Adobe Illustrator for creating custom graphics; Adobe Photoshop Elements for editing photos; Microsoft Publisher for creating brochures and flyers; Adobe Acrobat and PDF995 for creating PDF files; Microsoft Office.

Multimedia CD-ROM Creation Tools
Assemble and burn auto-run, interactive, multimedia CDs to showcase student portfolios, presentations, or catalogs of photos or artwork.

Software Available: iDVD (Mac), HyperStudio, Multimedia Builder, and Nero (for burning CD- and DVD-ROMS).

Visualization Tools
Illustrate complex concepts and ideas in math, geography, and geology. Generate digital concept maps from brainstorming sessions, create high-quality diagrams and schematics, or produce QuickTime Panoramas.

Software Available: Geometer's Sketchpad for math; Manifold for GIS, geology, and geography; Inspiration for concept mapping; SmartDraw for diagramming; Panorama Factory for QTVRs.
