Studio-D: Digital Projects Studio
Policies and Procedures
On This Page:
Back to Introduction
The Digital Projects Studio (Studio-D) and associated
equipment are available to Boise State students
working on course assignments requiring the use of digital
media, for classes in which the students are currently enrolled.
In order for Studio-D staff to authorize usage, students are
asked to provide the name of the instructor and class in which
they are assigned the project. Instructors are asked to verify
student projects by providing the Digital Projects Studio staff
with a description of the assignment and the name of the class
in which the assignment is given.
Instructors who are planning to include a digital-media
component in a class assignment are encouraged to contact
Barbara Schroeder (426-1870,
bschroed@boisestate.edu) before making their
assignments, in order to schedule training and to review
strategies for managing digital-media projects. You can contact
Barbara directly, or you can place an
online order to schedule a
consultation and authorize your students to use Digital Projects
Studio. On the Order Online page, click “Consulting on Student Media Assignments.”
Successful digital-media projects involve careful planning,
preparing and training students, establishing benchmarks for
completion, and reasonable parameters for project size. The
instructional design staff at Academic Technologies is eager to
provide consultation for faculty in order to support successful
integration of media technology into the curriculum.

- Hours
- The lab
is open during the fall and spring semesters Monday through
Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays.
These hours may vary, depending on the availability of lab
staff. Any deviation from this schedule will be posted outside
the lab door.
- Lab Assistance
-
Student Technology Assistants are available during all hours
of operation. The Digital Projects Studio also provides
students with “Quick Start” guides and resources for learning
the basics of available software. However, Student Technology
Assistants may not be able to answer all questions, and
students must be prepared to consult manuals, tutorials, and
online help to answer software questions.
Student Technology Assistants will provide instruction in
basic operation of software, suggest media appropriate for a
particular assignment, and refer students to additional
resources such as online help files and tutorials. However,
they will not, under any circumstance, do students’ media work
for them.

- Students must be currently enrolled at Boise State
and present a valid Student ID, along with the
name of the instructor and class for which they are
completing a project. Upon checking into the lab, students
will be asked to provide the name of the course, their
instructor’s name, and the type of project they have been
assigned.
- All students must log-in at the STA’s station, located
at the lab entrance. Studio-D is a "first come, first served" facility.
- Eating, drinking, and use of tobacco products in the lab
is prohibited.
- All students are asked to be considerate of others in
order to have a good working environment in which to work.
Noise should be kept to a minimum.
- Non-academic use of the computers is prohibited,
including such uses as game playing, instant messaging, and
personal e-mail. Cellular phones and beepers must be placed
on quiet mode, and calls must be made or completed outside
the lab.
- To reserve a computer in order to ensure access to a
particular software application, please sign up in advance to
make reservations for a 2-hour time period.
- Students may not install software on, or copy software
from, any lab computers. This includes downloaded programs
from the Internet.
- Do not leave personal belongings unattended. The Digital
Projects Studio is not responsible for lost, stolen, or
misplaced items.
- Be sure to keep a backup of all your important computer
files. The Digital Projects Studio is not responsible for
corrupt data, lost files, or virus infected files.
Information stored on the computer’s desktop is

- Logon procedures
-
The keyboard at each workstation displays the username and
password for that workstation. Enter this information to log
into that computer.
- Saving Files
-
Any files saved to the desktop of the computer will be
automatically deleted that evening. Files saved to the My
Documents folder, or to network storage, are not
automatically deleted. Student project files are saved until
the end of the semester, at which time they will be deleted
and not recoverable.
- Media Formats
-
The Digital Projects Studio is a digital media lab.
Consequently, students must be prepared to convert non-digital formats
(for example, VHS and VHS-C tapes, Hi-8 tapes, audio cassettes) to
digital formats prior to being able to import or capture the
footage or audio files.
|
Academic Technologies
provides these digitizing services, including converting
Hi-8, VHS tapes, VHS-C tapes, and cassette tapes. Inquire at
the Academic Technologies Front Desk, 426.326. Blank
digital media (CDs, DVDs and Mini-DV Cassettes) are
available for purchase in the lobby vending machine or at the BSU Bookstore. |
- Printing Policy
-
The use of the lab printer is reserved for documents directly
related to student assignments. When you send a document to
the printer, the print job will be automatically paused. A
Student Technology Assistant must then approve the printing request
before the print job is sent to the printer. For multiple copies,
copiers are available in the library, Campus Copy in the College of Education, and
Campus Copy in the Student Union Building.
